James Taylor and Son have been making classic shoes since 1857 and, in 1950, merged with the Orthopaedic Footwear Company producing surgical shoes for every ailment and complaint. We make surgical shoes to special requirements for people with a vast range of medical foot problems, helping to manage the condition and prevent deterioration wherever possible.
Our surgical shoes can be made specifically to help one or more condition, including arthritis and diabetes-related foot problems; bunions, corns and calluses; back problems, foot pain and odd foot shapes and sizes. We will provide you with shoes that not only minimise discomfort and progression of foot problems, but are also stylish and attractive.
Bespoke surgical shoes can be made to your particular specifications. We will need to measure your feet to ensure the perfect fit of the shoes – this can be carried out at our shop or at a convenient location for you by arrangement. At this fitting we will agree the style, type of leather and colour of your your new shoes. It takes approximately three months to make a pair of surgical shoes, during which time we will require you to try the shoes on, but they can be sent to you directly for fitting at your convenience.
Assessments for surgical shoes are carried out by our managing director, Peter Schweiger, who started his training in making surgical shoes in 1964. Peter is a member of the Society of Expert Witnesses and is qualified to assess and report on medical conditions and surgical shoe requirements following accidents. These kinds of shoes may also be zero-rated for VAT purposes with a supporting medical certificate.
