Sir Edmond Hilary
Robert Lawie, the Mountain boot makers passed on a boot when they closed in 1986 that was reputed to have been made for Sir Edmund Hilary. It is a climbing boot which is heavy, ridgid and very strong. There is a middle sole which has been double hand sewn. There are hobnails and toeplates for grip and protection.
The boot was sent with it's mate to him but the parcel broke open and the boot was lost in the post. Another was swiftly made and used for the conquest of Everest. Many months later the missing boot was returned and has been used as a sample in both shops ever since.
You are welcome to come and have a look.
Nancy Taylor
Nancy Taylor the great grand daughter of James Taylor, founder of the firm, died aged 93 on December 28th 2007.
Her funeral was on Wednesday 9th January at Golders Green Crematorium where there was a service held to celebrate her life. A group of relatives and friends were led by the Rev Herbert Baker who spoke well and commented on the two readings, and testamonies made about Nacy's life. She had been a student at Girton College and then worked for ICI. She is survived by her sister Peggy who is 4 years older.
I recall how we made her a pair of bespoke shoes in 1990 for her to go on a walking holiday in Normandy. When she returned she felt much better for it. A great testament for good walking shoes.
