Established in 1857, James Taylor & Son has built up an excellent reputation for making beautiful, classic shoes that are incredibly comfortable to wear. That's over 150 years of perfecting the craft of traditional handmade shoemaking, resulting in boots and shoes of superior quality.

In 1952 the Orthopaedic Footwear Company Ltd led by Hannes Schweiger took over James Taylor & Son when the grandsons Frank and Ernest Taylor wanted to retire. Hannes Schweiger combined his footwear skills with the ability to make footwear for people with medical conditions and had an NHS contract for many years. James Taylor & Son continues to be a family business that lends itself to being the only shoemaker that can offer you a personal service and the expertise and experience to make shoes individually for you and your needs.

Peter Schweiger, managing director since 1972, learned his shoe making skills from his father. He is ably supported by a team of craftsmen and women experienced in the art of creating beautiful handmade shoes that will make you smile.

We are able to offer a complete range of services that includes everything from shoe making, repairing, and adapting shoes with wedges and raises, to stocking a range of the best sundries to keep your shoes and boots looking their best. We also stock a range of ready made shoes and sandals that provide instant comfort and support.
